Tutors Needed

By Steve

It’s not fun to take the negative position when we complain about the inadequacies of the SCASD curriculum choices.  Some of us parents have begun discussions of what we can do to positively impact math education in SCASD while we wait for the District to get its curriculum house in order.  Starting a “math circle” is one possibility that has been raised.  Another would be to directly help kids who are struggling in math by serving as a volunteer tutor.  This looks like a great program that has special need for math tutors:

K-12 Tutors Needed for Spring 2010

The Volunteers in Public Schools organization is looking for tutors/mentors for grade K-12 students in the State College Area School District. Volunteers can work at our after-school tutoring center on Wednesdays and/or Thursdays (3:30-6:00 each day, one-hour minimum per week), in a classroom environment during the school day, or in various other capacities. Math, science, social studies, foreign language, English, English as a Second Language, and K-6 tutors/mentors are needed.

For more information on either requesting a tutor or classroom aide or in signing up to volunteer, contact Catherine Lehman at cdt13@scasd.org or call 814-235-4915.

There is Penn State State College math circle on the map. Do you know anything about it?
As I recall, math circle is not established in State College yet. Am I right? When do we plan to begin it?

  2. I believe Sergei put that mark on the map, sort of as a placeholder for the circle that might be developed here. Sergei is away this semester, but I am hoping we can discuss this further with him over e-mail in the coming months and maybe begin something in the fall.
