Congratulations

… to new SCASD Directors Penni Fishbaine and Jim Leous, and to re-elected incumbents David Hutchinson, Gowen Roper, and Jim Pawelczyk.  Here is the final tally:

        Candidate Votes Pct
        PENNI FISHBAINE (DEM/REP) . . . . . 9,408 24.37
        DAVID K HUTCHINSON (DEM/REP) . . . . 8,777 22.74
        JIM LEOUS (DEM) . . . . . . . . 7,234 18.74
        J GOWEN ROPER (DEM) . . . . . . . 6,865 17.79
        BRIAN KALEITA (REP) . . . . . . . 6,143 15.92

What these results mean for the future of  “Investigations” in SCASD remains to be seen.  The two departing Board members were enthusiastic “Investigations” supporters.  One new director, Penni Fishbaine, has been unequivocal in calling for reconsideration of the District’s core math program.  The other, Jim Leous, has voiced a position that might be characterized as very cautious support for “Investigations”.

As we move into the spring, the Board may face the decision of whether to purchase the second edition of “Investigations” for grades K, 3, and 4 (last spring’s vote to purchase materials for grades 1, 2, and 5 was approved by a 6-3 vote).  On behalf of the other parents active in last spring’s petition drive, let me say that we will be happy to provide the Board members, both new and returning, with data and analysis that will help them reach decisions that are best for the children of the District.

Thank you, Steve. Thanks for your advocacy on this issue and I do look forward to looking over your information.

Good to hear from you Jim! I do hope you will look at the data carefully as you begin your school board tenure!

I have high hopes and standards for education and would like to see all our kids competing at the same level in math with their peers in China, Chile, Cameroon, Canada, or even just California.
